Commission an Artwork

Having difficulty finding that perfect piece of artwork for that sliver of wall between two windows? Looking for a portrait or your favorite four-legged furry friend? Or maybe an artwork on my website has caught your eye but it’s too large or small or maybe it doesn’t complement the color of your decor.

Worry not. I can solve your decorating issues with a personal artwork commission.

How Does the Commission Process Work?

  1. Contact the artist, Dawn M. Wayand, directly by email at dawn@dawnmwayand.com. Please include the following information for a quote for a commissioned artwork:
    1. Your full name, email address, the best phone number to reach you, and your complete shipping address (no P.O. Boxes).
    2. Describe your perfect artwork or what you are looking for to put on your wall.
    3. Specify the room type where it will hang (i.e. living room, bedroom, etc.) and where exactly it will hang in that room (i.e. above the sofa, above the bed, etc.)
    4. Provide exact measurements of wall space where the artwork will hang, from floor to ceiling, and, if above furniture, the height and width of the piece of furniture below where the artwork will hang.
    5. Attach images for inspiration that help convey the idea or feeling behind what you want to be painted.
    6. If you have a particular color scheme in mind, please include photos of your room and decor where the piece will hang OR if you have certain colors in mind, please describe the colors you wish to see in your artwork.
    7. Specify your budget.
    8. Specify whether the artwork should have any three-dimensional elements (see my current three-dimensional canvas paintings for what I can create…)
    9. Send the email and I will respond to you within five (5) business days with a quote.
  2. Once I send you a quote with details about what I can paint for you, which may include general rough sketches of the artwork to be commissioned and a timeframe for completion, you pay a non-refundable deposit to have me get the ball rolling on creating your commissioned work of art. (See more about deposits below.)
  3. After you pay the non-refundable deposit, I will begin working on your masterpiece. Before I begin painting, I will send you color samples by mail on a small piece of canvas so that you can approve the colors (or choose from similar colors) that will be included in your painting.
  4. You will get photo updates of your artwork’s progress at the end of each day that I work on the artwork so that we can both ensure the work is on track with what has been agreed to at the outset of your commissioned piece.
  5. Once the artwork is complete and you approve the final artwork photos, the balance of the commission price will be due. After payment, your artwork will be shipped to you.

Commissioned Artwork FAQs:

How Can I Commission Dawn M. Wayand to Paint a One-of-a-Kind Artwork for Me?

Contact the artist, Dawn M. Wayand, directly by email at dawn@dawnmwayand.com and include all the details requested by her regarding your artwork commission specified in #1 of the section above.

What Type of Artworks Can I Commission?

Please take a moment to peruse my website at art.dawnmwayand.com to view the current types of artwork I have available and this will give you an idea of the types of artwork I am capable of painting. If you do not see anything on the website that suits your idea, ask me anyway. PLEASE NOTE: I do not paint people’s portraits, not because I can’t but because when it comes to portraiture (and I know this being a professional photographer also), people can be very particular about how their portraits look, and it can sometimes end up with both parties unsatisfied with the results.

How Much Will a Commissioned Artwork Cost?

That’s between you, and me as the artist. You specify your budget up front in your inquiry email and I will let you know if I can take on your commission within your budget. We can work together to try to reach a fair price.

What is the Deposit for a Commissioned Artwork?

The deposit for commissioning an original artwork is 50% of the quoted price/cost for creating the artwork. Once I have agreed to take your commission, I will email you an invoice via PayPal which can be paid either by an existing PayPal account or by a credit card (Visa, Mastercard, Discover, or American Express) without having to have a PayPal account.

Can I Use a Promotional Discount Code When Commissioning an Artwork?

Promotional discount codes are only valid for existing artworks on the Dawn M. Wayand Arts website and only when the discount codes are offered. When you commission a custom artwork, the price is discussed before the commencement of the commission, therefore commission deposits or final payments cannot be discounted.

How Long Will The Commission Take to Produce?

It depends on the size and detail involved. If you have a deadline, please provide that deadline date in your initial inquiry, otherwise, once I receive your initial inquiry for a commission, I will give you an idea of how long it will take me to create.

How Can I Check The Progress of My Commission Along the Way?

I will update you with photos at the end of each day that I work on your commission. If I do not work on your painting on a particular day due to other personal obligations, you will not receive an email that day. However, once you book me to produce an artwork for you, I will give you a general timeline of what to expect and when to expect it.

What is the Final Approval Process?

Once I complete the painting, I will send you a final email with photos of the artwork for your approval and feedback. Once approved, I will submit a final invoice to you for the 50% balance of the commission price, plus any applicable taxes/duties, through PayPal which can be paid either by an existing PayPal account or by a credit card (Visa, Mastercard, Discover, or American Express) without having to have a PayPal account. After the invoice is paid, I will then ship your artwork to you.

Buyer’s Obligations

  1. You, as the customer or “Buyer”, will provide all necessary information (including images where applicable) for the artist to agree to a timeline, a scope, and a fixed price for the commissioned artwork.
  2. Once authorized, the Buyer agrees to stay in regular contact with me as the artist, until the transaction is completed.
  3. The Buyer will pay an agreed amount, as a non-refundable initial deposit, at the commencement of the transaction at which point the Buyer commits to purchasing the final product and paying the final commission balance provided all interim progress reports meet their approval. The price agreed with the artist will not change once the deposit has been paid unless otherwise agreed on between the Buyer and the artist. You are not obliged to proceed with the commission until you have paid the non-refundable deposit.
  4. The Buyer agrees to check emails and provide feedback on all progress updates from the artist in a timely manner. Continuing the positive exchange of messages with the artist may constitute approval of the progress under these terms.
  5. The Buyer will respect the artist’s creative process, style, and technique as part of the artistic process involved in the creation of the commission. The Buyer will accept the artist’s freedom of expression in accordance with their practice. By paying the deposit the Buyer confirms that they base their decision to proceed with the commission on the artist’s body of work presented to the Buyer on art.dawnmwayand.com at the time when requesting the commission.
  6. The Buyer will pay the final balance once the artwork has been completed. The Buyer will forfeit the non-refundable deposit should they choose not to proceed with the order.
  7. The Buyer agrees to accept the artwork as it is shipped, in accordance with what has been agreed with the artist.

Dawn M. Wayand Arts’ and the Artist’s Obligations

  2. The artist will correspond with the Buyer when it is appropriate, throughout the transaction. Once an artwork has been commissioned, the artist will correspond with the Buyer with progress updates every day that the commissioned artwork has new progress to report.
  3. Once funds have been collected for the final balance, the artist will ship your artwork to you at the address initially provided in your commission inquiry to the artist and provide tracking information for your commissioned work.
  4. The artist will oversee delivery and receipt of the artwork, at which point, the transaction will be concluded. The artist is always available for questions and concerns throughout and after the the process as necessary.

Returns and Disputes

  1. The Buyer waives any right to a return for a custom-made product, including any framing if applicable. A return can only be accepted if the artwork arrives damaged and then the normal Dawn M. Wayand Arts Return and Refunds Policy will apply, and the Buyer will receive a full refund, including the initial deposit.
  2. If there is a dispute between the customer and the artist, regarding the final product meeting the initial criteria, all notes and progress reports will be revisited, reviewed, and provided for dispute resolution purposes. The artist is not obligated to create a second commissioned artwork if the customer is dissatisfied with the first.
  3. The final resolution for all disputes will be decided by Dawn M. Wayand Arts and the artist and must be accepted by both the artist and the Buyer.
  4. No returns or refunds will be accepted or issued unless the final artwork varies significantly not only from the initial agreement of the commission between the Buyer and the artist but also if the Buyer did not agree to the progress through the artist’s updates during the commission process, including any variations from the initial agreement of the commission. Under no circumstances is the initial deposit payment refundable.
